The Whitchurch Rugby, Sport & Social Club in North Cardiff was built in the 1960's and had reached the end of its useful life. The Club realised that it could not continue to operate without new premises and started to explore the possibility of re-developing the site as a way of funding a new building. The design arranges 42 apartments and the new clubhouse along the curved edge of the site, all enjoying spectacular west-facing views across towards Radyr, and 8 townhouses on the site of the old clubhouse. The three new buildings are united by a façade of white render and grey windows above a plinth of dark blue engineering bricks. The scheme demonstrates how different uses can be combined satisfactorily and the value and potential of a largely underused site can be released by imaginative design.
