This project is an extension to the dining room of the Swanlea Secondary School in Whitechapel, London. The new building is a fully glazed reworking of the original aesthetic of white ladder windows and gently curved metal shell roofs. It is designed using lightweight components, for example concrete raft foundations and glue laminated timber gutter beams, in order to avoid the need for expensive piling which would be inappropriate to such a small project. The end result creates a beautiful light- filled white and timber interior, throwing daylight back into the original dining room, and blends seamlessly with the main school.
