Following our work for The Duchy of Cornwall as lead and coordinating architects for Phase One of the groundbreaking Poundbury development, we were employed by Westbury Homes to support their bid to develop 85 dwellings in Phase 2E. They were selected by The Duchy on condition that we were employed to design the buildings in detail. The development is grouped around a central square overlooking the Dorchester to Bridport Road, which is dominated by a formal colonnaded building housing flats above offices. As Phase 2E is closer to the planned centre of Poundbury than Phase One it is denser, and includes quite a high proportion of three storey buildings although the variety in the architecture and the roofscape tends to belie this density. A development from Phase One which we initiated is the inclusion of a number of flats over garages fronting onto the rear lanes giving them a mews atmosphere and good natural surveillance. The development includes the hundredth affordable unit provided at Poundbury by The Guinness Trust, and is the first section of the urban village to be developed by a volume housebuilder.
