The National Society for Epilepsy (NSE) accommodates world-class research and assessment facilities for the treatment of epilepsy, and provides residential care to people with epilepsy on a permanent basis. Its care homes are almost all below the new Minimum Standards required by law, and need to be rebuilt. 68 care home bedspaces are to be provided to the new standards in 4 new buildings. Construction of the first two, Queen Elizabeth Care Home and Russell House is complete. Care Home B which is currently under construction and Care Home C were granted planning permission in January 2009. In addition planning permission has also recently been granted for the Clinical Research Centre, which will be dedicated to discovering the genetic factors which can lead to epilepsy - an understanding of which should lead to improved treatment. Architecturally the new buildings are different but share the common architectural language set particularly by the four listed buildings on the NSE site. The care homes are split into 4/5 bed 'family' units with en-suites to all bedrooms and shared kitchens, dining and living rooms. Each care home has its own secluded garden as well as enjoying the mature landscape setting of the site in Chalfont St Peter.
