The philosophy behind The Prince of Wales' groundbreaking urban village development at Poundbury involves mixing different uses within the urban structure as in traditional towns. So employment and industrial buildings are not segregated in a business park but are incorporated close to houses, offices and shops. The unit we designed attached to the existing farm complex at Middle Farm barns is the first industrial unit to be built at Poundbury and its position close to a row of houses is a clear expression of this philosophy. The high aesthetic quality of the building, combining a brick perimeter wall facing the countryside with a roof pattern incorporating black timber cladding and continuous clerestorey natural lighting, is also a Poundbury characteristic.
