The site of the Severn Stiles Public House is well placed for access to local facilities and a bus stop on a route into Newport City Centre and is therefore ideally suitable for residential development.

The scheme for 9 houses and 15 flats places the majority of the accommodation on street frontages to Aberthaw Road and Liswerry Road with the remainder facing a new footpath through the site that exploits a currently well used informal pedestrian route linking Henry Wood Close with the bus stops on Aberthaw Road.

The proposed buildings are 2-storey, reflecting surrounding development, apart from a 3-storey tower, with lower ground floor, that forms a landmark feature at the junction of Aberthaw and Liswerry Roads. The architectural treatment is simple; rendered walls, pitched roofs covered in plain tile and slate, painted timber windows, doors and canopies.

The development retains an existing stone wall along Aberthaw Road. The built form encloses two car parking courts and thereby negates any adverse effect that areas of car parking might have on the streetscene to Aberthaw and Liswerry Roads.

The proposed development, granted planning permission in October 2008, maximises the potential of a site that is in a highly sustainable location, respects the form and scale of development in this part of Newport and indeed makes a positive contribution to the streetscene.
