One of the first projects planned by The Duchy of Cornwall for the Newquay Growth Area is this home for 60 elderly residents, together with new headquarters offices for Cornwall Care who will run the home. The building is planned, like many traditional almshouses, around a garden court which provides a quiet haven, protected from the outside world. Arranged around it in a south facing U-shape are the residents' rooms, which are divided into four clusters of fifteen, two per floor, each focussed on a group of common rooms - dining, lounge, quiet room - which overlook the court at its corners. The central entrance has a public side to the north fronting the planned new High Street, giving the residents easy access to shops and other facilities, and a private side onto the garden court. Service access to kitchen and laundry are from a separate lane to the south. Cornwall Care's offices are planned at second floor level, so creating an impressive three storey frontage and tower to the existing open space and playing fields to the west.
