The redesign of the Chepstow Castle car park and the construction of a Tourist Information Centre was carried out in close consultation with Monmouth Borough Council's architect, the staff of the neighbouring Museum and CADW. We consciously avoided the current fashion of making a Visitor Centre a monument in its own right in competition with the real monument- in this case the Castle. Instead we have made it one of the everyday buildings along the street in this beautiful part of Chepstow. The building divides naturally into three parts: an exhibition space fronting onto the street, the information centre facing the car park and the public toilets at the rear. The design, which is closely based on the local vernacular, treats these three sections individually, giving the building an incremental appearance as though it had grown over time.
