The Health Centre is to be housed in a fine Edwardian style building designed as public baths. Bristol North Baths was built in 1912 and remained a community landmark within Bishopston right up until its closure in November 2005. As shown in S Loxton's drawing of 1915 in the centre of the sheet, an elaborate annexe was originally proposed to the north of the Baths, but was never built, probably due to financial constraints after the First World War. To suit its new function the building is to be converted with accommodation for community health groups and a pharmacy on the ground floor and the Spence Medical Practice on the new first floor level. New window openings have been carefully introduced to let light into what was largely an internal space top lit by the continuous ridge lantern. The central waiting area of the doctor's surgery is open up to the roof and glazed panels within the new first floor allow borrowed light down into the community rooms below. Sustainability has been a major consideration and a combined heat and power unit is proposed to heat both the Health Centre and the new Bishopston Library alongside and photovoltaics and natural ventilation cowls will be incorporated within the new ridge light. Every effort has been made to maintain the original character of the Bristol North Baths, which, along with the new library next door, will continue to be a community hub for Bishopston.
